Monsoon flooding in Bangladesh and India impacts millions
Rahman told CNN Sunday that at least two people have died from flooding in Bangladesh. News agency reports suggest the toll is much higher, with Reuters reporting 25 deaths over the weekend, citing local officials.
The lack of telecommunications services has made it difficult to fully assess the extent of the damage, especially in hard-hit districts like Sylhet and Sunamganj, Rahman said.
He noted that 90% of Sunamganj district is underwater and is almost completely cut off from the rest of the country.
Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) news agency reported that nearly six million people had been displaced by the floods.
The Bangladesh Red Crescent Association plans to help with resettlement efforts and will “cash out cash assistance to families affected by floods,” the organization wrote on Twitter late Saturday.
Meanwhile, the eastern Indian state of Assam, neighboring Bangladesh, was also affected by floods.
At least eight people have been killed there in the past 24 hours, the Assam Disaster Management Authority said in a statement released Sunday. The agency also said floods and landslides have killed at least 62 people in Assam since April.
