Munguia is coming off a ninth-round stoppage of former WBO interim super middleweight champion John 'The Gorilla' Ryder, 32-6, in Islington, London, UK, at Footprint Center Phoenix, Arizona, in January 2024.
In May 2023, Alvarez decided Ryder over 12 rounds.
With a win over Alvarez, Munguia will go after former world champion Floyd “Money” Mayweather, Jr. and his 50-0 record.
Mayweather equaled the 49-0 record of former heavyweight champion Rocky “The Brockton Blockbuster” Marciano, who retired in September 1955, by defeating former WBC and IBF Welterweight champion Andre Berto, 30-3 , on September 20-15. Berto was 3-3 in his previous six games.
In August 2017, Mayweather broke Marciano's 62-year-old record, making it 50-0, by stopping former UFC champion Conor McGregor, his boxing debut, in 10 rounds.
While many boxers chase Marciano's record, there are only 3 undefeated boxers with at least 40 wins and at least 30 wins.
WBA Super World, WBC and WBO Welterweight Champion Terence 'Bud' Crawford is 40-0 with 31 stoppages from Omaha, Nebraska.
Crawford relinquishes his IBF title, which he won against Jaron “Boots” Ennis, 31-0, with 28 stoppages from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
The only other fighter with at least 40 wins is WBA lightweight champion Fedebol Abel 'El Zorro' Mendoza, 40-0 and 30 stoppages from El Paso, Texas.
Mendoza's last six fights were five in Colombia, South America, the last in January 2024, and once in Jamaica in November 2023.
Others with at least 30 unbeaten wins besides Ennis are former WBO world middleweight champion Jermall 'Hit Man' Charlo, 33-0, with 22 stoppages, who last fought in November 2023, defeated Jose Benavidez, Jr., 28-2-1, at Michelob Ultra Arena, at 166 ½ pounds.
His brother, former unified Super Welterweight champion Jermell “Iron Man” Charlo, 35-2-1, was defeated by Alvarez in September 2023.
Others undefeated with at least 30 wins are WBC world super lightweight champion Devin “The Dream” Haney, 31-0 with 15 stoppages and scheduled to fight this Saturday, defending against Ryan “King Ry” Garcia, 24-1 with 20 stops at Barclay's Center, Brooklyn, New York.
WBA Continental Americas lightweight champion William “Camaron” Zepeda, 30-0 with 26 stoppages from San Mateo Atenco, Mexico, is the other undefeated fighter with at least 30 wins.
Mayweather has held a 50-0 record for about seven years and with today's fighters fighting once or twice a year, this record will last for a while but probably not as long as Marciano's 62 years.
