‘Mythic Quest’ Season 3 Review

There’s something admirable about a TV show that can completely change its formula, take its core characters in different directions and still be an enjoyable series that audiences love. initial. It was not an easy task, but the third season of Apple TV+’s Mythic Quest make the challenge look like a breeze.

After the Season 2 finaleThe future of Mythic Quest aired (as well as the futures of all of the show’s characters). On the other hand, the episode feels like it could double as a series finale — as several of the main characters quit at video game development studio Mythic Quest, including Poppy Li (Charlotte Nicdao) and Ian Grimm (Rob McElhenney). But on the other hand, there’s a lot of story left to tell — including where Poppy and Ian are headed, along with how the rest of the characters will go on their journey.

Despite that satisfying finale, the show was early renewal not only for the third season, but also for the fourth season. After watching all 10 episodes, it’s clear that giving us time to see these characters move on with their lives is a step in the right direction.

The new season takes place a year after Season 2 ended. Poppy and Ian have founded their new game company GrimPop and are busy with their next project, Hera. (Well, at least Poppy.) Meanwhile, Brad Bakshi (Danny Pudi), who fell in love with Jo (Jessie Ennis) during an insider trading scandal, is out of prison on parole. and back to work as a janitor. at Mythic Quest. Jo is once again supporting Executive Producer David Brittlesbee (David Hornsby), who is shouldering more responsibility when two creative co-directors have fired him. Dana (Imani Hakim) and Rachel (Ashly Burch) are still going strong (yay!), making long distance relationships work: Rachel is at school and Dana is working for Poppy and Ian.

The heart of the show still belongs to Poppy and Ian. The duo delivers some of the biggest laughs (Poppy playing jazz whenever she’s excited is never without fun and flawless) along with the show’s biggest source of emotion. While McElhenney and Nicdao don’t miss a single humorous moment of their characters’ friendship, they also bring devastating emotions to some of the deeper scenes, many of which are numerous this season.

The finale of season two may have found all the characters diverging in new directions, as life often happens, but they’re really not as far apart as you might think. Ian and Poppy’s new office is just one floor below Mythic Quest after all. In fact, changing the dynamics of the office (and adding a whole new office setting) allows for new opportunities to piece together unlikely groups of characters.

Jo, queen of scary bras, becomes friends with Poppy and Rachel after a day-long brunch out—it’s easily one of the funniest episodes of the season. Ian and Dana go on a road trip and discover that although they are wildly different people, they are frighteningly similar creatively. Brad and Jo, although no longer in a mentor/mentor relationship, continue to strengthen their relationship through new misdeeds. That includes a quest to catch a rat – the animal, not a rat, much to their dismay.

There is a specific Mythic Quest employee We know we won’t be returning to the series: CW Longbottom (F. Murray Abraham), the inappropriate and overconfident writer of the game Mythic Quest. His absence is quickly resolved in the first episode, giving the CW the mixed joy he deserves.

While the CW’s presence is missed, the show fills the space by highlighting several other characters instead. We got to see a lot more HR coordinator/office therapist Carol by Naomi Ekperigin this season, which is a huge win for us. She is the newly minted head of diversity and inclusion at Mythic Quest, a position she was given with no direction and no budget. Instead, it’s just a title and no real job responsibilities — “a look behind the white curtain,” as she puts it. Carol now finds herself in a position of power and is determined to use it for good – which, aside from the obvious “yeah” that we and she both agitated, is awakening. Eat for fun jokes. When she was accused by a middle-aged white man of ageism in her hiring practices, because she was hiring too many diverse young people, she defeated him by hiring two inspectors. check the middle age game. Lesson: Don’t mess with Carol.

While the show leans towards comedy as much as it always does, it also makes sure to deepen the characters’ stories. This season’s bottle episode, a regular part of the show at this point, is particularly emotional. It dives deeper into the story of Ian and Poppy, going a long way in explaining the duo’s unorthodox move.

With the perfect balance between humor and heart, Mythic Quest keep getting better with each new part. In true video game fashion, the show defeated the final boss—but it was later revealed that there would be more adventures after that was said and done.
