NASA has shared an image of a beautiful cosmic duo of galaxies, located about 215 million light-years from Earth in the constellation Pisces. The image was taken by the Hubble telescope, NASA’s current horse for studying the mysteries of deep space. The galaxies appear to be crashing into each other, but in reality, they are very far apart, NASA says. The main spiral galaxy is known as NGC 105 and its elongated neighbor appears to be touching its edge. However, that was only “a circumstance of opinion”, the agency said.
Hubble Space Telescope, a joint project of NASA and ESA, launched in 1990 and has been studying the universe ever since. Because of its unobstructed view of the universe, the telescope has so far made more than 1.3 million observations, including OLDdistant galaxies are amused. It has helped astronomers determine the age of the universe and keep an eye on planets in the Solar System.
This week’s image shows a spectacular duo of galaxies, NASA said, adding that the two galaxies are very far away from what they appear to be in the image.
French astronomer Edouard Stephan first found NGC 105 in 1884. So far not much is known about its elongated neighbour. To capture this image, the Hubble team used “A vast collection of Hubble measurements examining neighboring galaxies contain two fascinating astronomical phenomena. “
These two phenomena are variable stars, also known as pulsars, and cataclysmic supernova explosions, which occur after the death of a massive star. Why are these phenomena important? They help astronomers measure the distances between different cosmic objects. This leads to a better understanding of how the universe is expanding.
Hubble often shares spectacular images of the gravitational objects it captures. Last month, it shared an image of a brilliant spiral galaxy called NCG 7329. The image shows a stellar vortex with a centered yellow light and blue spirals.
Having served more than 30 years, Hubble is now aging, and NASA and international partners plan to replace it with James Webb . Space Telescope.
