Navjot Sidhu’s Latest Threat to Punjab Government
Chandigarh:
Punjab Parliament Speaker Navjot Singh Sidhu today continued his campaign against Charanjit Singh Channi’s government, declaring that he will go on a hunger strike if the government does not publicly report on the drug threat and crime.
State agencies’ reports on the drug problem have been submitted to the Supreme Court and Mr Sidhu wants the government to share the findings with the public.
Mr. Sidhu said today: “The party that came to power promised to eliminate drugs.
“But if the government doesn’t open the drug reports, I will go on hunger strike. We need to prove why the previous minister (Captain Amarinder Singh) is sitting on these reports. Now the government This should open these reports.Court He told reporters.
The removal of Amarinder Singh after a yearlong feud did not bring much peace in the Punjab Parliament. With Mr Sidhu’s aspirations for the top spot crumbling again with Mr Channi’s pick, the cricketer-turned-politician has done little to ease the pressure on the state government.
Days after Mr. Channi’s oath, he expressed displeasure with the minister’s selection of the cabinet, state police chief and defense general. The matter was sorted out after much back and forth, but the truce between the two sides was uncomfortable.
Last month, Mr Sidhu wrote to Sonia Gandhi, listing a 13-point agenda of “priority areas” and promises made ahead of 2017 polls in which he said “the administration state must do”.
His proposals include arrests in drug cases, the creation of agricultural infrastructure and legislation to control the “cable mafia”.
