Nebraska cuts ties with 2022 interim coach Mickey Joseph after being arrested
LINCOLN, Neb. — Mickey Joseph, NebraskaThis season’s nine-game interim soccer coach, who has been charged with felony assault, is no longer participating in Cornhusker’s program, the sports department announced Friday.
The department said in a statement that it would have no further comment.
According to a police affidavit, Joseph allegedly strangled a woman, pulled her hair, and punched her during a domestic argument on November 30. He was charged on November 1. December for assault by strangulation or suffocation.
He was placed on administrative leave after his arrest. He denied to police that he assaulted the woman, and his next court appearance is on January 30.
Joseph was arrested two days after Matt Rhule was introduced as the team’s new head coach.
It is unclear if Joseph received severance pay. He has a contract until December 31, 2023 and his annual salary is listed as $600,000.
Under the terms of his contract, he could be fired if convicted of a misdemeanor or felony that impairs his ability to perform duties on behalf of the university. If the reasoned dismissal is upheld, the university will not have to pay the amount owed in the contract.
