The 2021 Subaru WRX STI could go down in history as the last STI model powered by an internal combustion engine. Subaru today announced that the gas-powered WRX STI is dead, but also hinted that the next generation of the brand’s iconic model could be an EV. The company also did not mention when a next-generation WRX STI EV might arrive.
Since the regular WRX sedan has completely redesigned on a new platform, we were eagerly anticipating the reveal of our high-performance partner, STI. We had imagined it had an even more powerful version of the standard model’s 271-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter flat-four – something more akin to 400 ponies. However, Subaru now says it won’t build an internal combustion version of the next-generation WRX STI based on the regular WRX platform.
In an official statement, Subaru explained that its plans to focus on electric versions of performance models have been affected by the auto industry’s move to electrification. Emission reduction targets and compliance with government fuel economy regulations are also covered. Currently, the only electrified Subaru model on the market is plug-in-hybrid Crosstrek. The company will add its first all-electric model this year with 2023 Solterraa small SUV developed in cooperation with Toyota bZ4X.
Subaru also opens the door to the potential of expanding its performance-oriented STI brand to future models. We’re not sure if that means that a potential expansion of the STI moniker will include any gas-fired models, or that every STI will be all-electric from now on. The company has shown a The Solterra STI . concept at Tokyo Auto Salon 2022, but we don’t hide any technical details.
