Police say at least nine people, including a 10-year-old boy, suffocated when crowds flocking to watch a New Year’s fireworks display were trapped in a narrow corridor of a shopping mall near the capital. Uganda.
Police said people began jostling through an aisle in the Freedom City Mall shortly after the clock struck midnight.
“A lot of people get stuck as they flock to see the fireworks. In doing so, many people suffocated. So far nine people have been confirmed dead,” the police statement read.
People celebrated the new year at the mall located on the highway connecting Kampala with Entebbe airport.
