NYRA issues equine safety statement in Belmont
After an incident after the eighth race on Belmont’s Monday card where Cold Hard Cash (Music by Maclean) suffered an apparent cardiovascular event while galloping, collapsing and dying on the track, NYRA spokesman Pat McKenna released the following statement:
“The health and safety of the horses and jockeys competing at the NYRA track is our highest priority and top of all other considerations. NYRA’s comprehensive safety strategy is informed by cutting-edge research and science in consultation with independent experts, veterinarians and horsemen. Every horse that competes at Belmont Park is required to undergo an extensive pre-race veterinary examination before horses are allowed to race. In addition to physical examination and observation, prescribed veterinarians perform a detailed assessment of each horse’s medical record, performances, and past training. Following these well-established protocols, Cold Hard Cash passed the required pre-race veterinary check. During the investigation of this injury, officials from the Horse Racing Integrity and Safety Authority (HISA) as well as the New York State Equestrian Medical Director will analyze the autopsy results. The NYRA, HISA, and the New York State Gaming Commission will closely review the circumstances surrounding this incident to ensure we are providing the safest environment possible for races and training at Belmont Park. “
Five horses were seriously injured in the race at the spring/summer 2023 meeting in Belmont Park, which began May 4, and had 2,493 starts in 326 races.
