The large SUV segment has seen a lot of activity over the past few years. Jeep has returned to the category in a big way with its resurgence Wagoneer pattern (and deluxe decoration Grand Wagoneer version) for 2022. General Motors has rolled out a formidable list of all-new SUVs for 2021 — Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburbanand GMC Yukon. And Ford has treated its Expedition (redesigned for 2018) to a strong refresh for the year 22 that includes updated styling, upgraded infotainment and tech features, and a new model. Meanwhile, the Nissan Armada and Toyota Sequoia have become leaders in the segment. The Armada was “redesigned” for the US market for 2017, but that “new” model is actually a modified version of Nissan’s global Patrol SUV – redesigned for the year. 2010. The Armada and Sequoia were almost as “truck” (and thirsty) as today’s SUVs. They’re built on a truck-style frame-on-frame platform that provides a solid foundation for towing and off-roading, but has an overall less refined look than crossover SUVs ( and the newer styling Large SUV competitor, for that matter). Both are equipped with a large naturally aspirated V8 engine that delivers smooth, powerful power but also drinks gasoline at a furious speed.

All Armada SL models come standard with 20-inch alloy wheels, but the Midnight Edition 20 has a unique design. The Sequoia has a glossier black look with 20-inch wheels finished in black.

The Armada and Sequoia V8 powertrains are similar in size, power, and fuel economy. The Armada is equipped with a 5.6-liter engine that makes 400 hp and 413 lb-ft of torque, while the Sequoia has a 5.7-liter engine that makes 381 hp and 401 lb-ft. Unsurprisingly, our observed fuel economy isn’t as good in either category: We averaged 14.4 mpg in the Sequoia (which is a 4×4 model) and 14.5 mpg in the Armada (which is a 4×4 model). rear-wheel drive; 2WD vehicles are almost always more efficient than 4WD/AWD vehicles). The new widescreen infotainment display for 2021 gives it a more up-to-date look and feel than the Sequoia’s dashboard, which is REALLY showing its age. Even so, we appreciated the Sequoia’s simple control layout and large, easy-to-use climate control dials. Sequoia also best Armada in terms of storage space for small items.

As expected, second-row space is generous on both cars, but the Armada feels a bit more spacious than the Sequoia. Our Armada is equipped with a large center console containing cup holders and a large storage bin with a base/cushion cover. Sequoia also offers a second-row seat panel, but only in the top-end Platinum trim level. (It’s worth noting that the lack of a center console in the second row creates a sense of passing through the third row and also makes the third row feel less claustrophobic.)

The Armada outperforms the Sequoia in terms of third-row space and overall comfort. Both the seat bottom and backrest are exceptionally short and the sitting position must be bent due to the high floor. One of our editors complained that the bottom of the headrest was too long rubbing uncomfortably against his neck, even when the headrest was fully adjusted upwards. Armada’s third row seats are best suited for children; stingy space is particularly disappointing given the car’s enormous overall size.

Due in part to the old-fashioned body-on-frame architecture, both the Armada and the Sequoia have particularly high load-bearing floors in the cargo area, which can make loading heavy or bulky items difficult. more difficult. Both of our test cars were equipped with power liftgates — we found the Armada to be quite slow. The overall cargo space is cave, naturally. Armada offers 16.5 cubic feet of volume behind the third row of seats, which increases to 95.4 cubic feet with both the second and third rows of seats folded; Sequoia comes out on top with measurements of 18.9 and 120.1 cubic feet, respectively.
