On alleged attacks on Christians, Supreme Court wants reports from countries
New Delhi:
The Supreme Court today ordered the Home Office to seek reports from states including Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Karnataka, Odisha, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand on “attacks” on Christian establishments such as allegation in a plea.
A bench of Judges DY Chandrachud and Hima Kohli said an attack on individuals does not mean it is an attack on the community but it needs to verify the claims of any incident. any such if it is brought in a public interest lawsuit or a PIL.
Attorney General Tushar Mehta said that upon verification, the majority of the alleged cases mentioned in the confession were untrue and based on “self-serving articles” published on a portal electronic.
He said the court should not pass an order in such a plea, or it would open Pandora’s box.
The bench gave the Interior Department two months to seek reports from the United States.
The Court said that it was only concerned that its previous rulings on appointing key staff to report and monitor such cases would be complied with by States.
The court’s order was based on calls by Pastor Dr Peter Machado of the National Solidarity Forum, Father Vijayesh Lal of the Evangelical Mission of India, and others to declare violence against with members of the Christian community in the country.
