While Handy as backup against boss, Elden RingMost summons can be quite mindless. But one particularly crafty spirit ash is well worth completing a short quest to obtain, if only to watch her unique interactions with wild animals of the Middle Lands.
Latenna the Albinauric is basically a turret. She rarely moves from where she is summoned, preferring instead to snipe enemies from afar with her magic bow. When Latenna met one of the Elden RingAs large wolves, however, she’ll climb onto the creature and use it as a mount, mimicking fellow Albinauric archers you encounter in a late-game area.
This gives Latenna access to a new freezing fog attack through the wolf’s maw, not to mention much greater mobility. That said, since Latenna ranks among Elden RingThe best spiritual ashes are largely because you can put her out of conflict, the wolf’s propensity to throw her into harm’s way can be a bit counterproductive.
Of course, like most things in Elden Ringthere are some interesting narrative explanations behind this mechanic.

Latenna, as her name suggests, is an Albinauric, a race described in the game as “created and refined by human hands”. Albinaurics come in two distinct varieties: a fairly normal-looking humanoid with weak or inactive legs and a wheeled mermaid with bulging, black eyes. Latenna belongs to the old, and when you find her seaside shack outside a cave in the Liurnia region, she is mourning the death of Lobo, her wolf ally.
After meeting some of the story requirements, Latenna will ask to accompany you on your journey to Miquella’s Halitree. If you agree, she will voluntarily sacrifice herself and become a powerful spirit.
As shown above, mounted wolves are still hostile if no other enemies are around and can damage both Latenna and the player with their mist spells. Latenna will also shoot arrows into the wolf’s head while on its back, creating an awkward, one-sided battle between her and her robbed mount that eventually leads to its death.
It is unclear whether Latenna’s wolf-riding mechanic was intended or perhaps a random accident from a time in Elden Ring evolution. That said, I wouldn’t be surprised to learn FromSoftware intentionally left this little easter egg in the game as a nod to Latenna’s origins as an Albinauric and her friendship with Lobo.
