Open Preakness Art Contest
racing artinaugurated last year as a partnership between 1/ST, the Maryland Jockey Club and the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), today launched the 2023 program. This year, the call for authors The entry has been extended to artists nationwide, and starting today, artists can submit their entries to www.preakness.com/the-art-of-racing. Submissions will be accepted until March 10.
The art competition celebrates the second crown jewel of the Triple Crown Series and its impact on Baltimore, as artists are invited to create and submit original, two-dimensional visual artwork depicting the elements. Unique elements of thoroughbred horse racing and Preakness Stakes. Last year’s show attracted nearly 150 entries and included an open voting period in which the public was invited to visit the said website to vote for their favorite artwork. This year’s voting range will run from March 13 to March 27. The top 10 picks will be entered into the final category with the winning entry selected by a panel of judges.
The winning artist of the second annual contest will be awarded US$4,000 and two tickets to Preakness 148 on May 20, 2023. In addition, their work will be reproduced on the weekly collection. Selected Preakness 148 merchandise will be available to purchase online and onsite during Preakness weekend. Once again, proceeds from merchandise sales will go to the Park Heights Renaissance, a nonprofit that pursues affordable housing and job opportunities for Park Heights residents.
