New Delhi:
The 94th Academy Awards were both attacked by Will Smith, who, shortly before he won the Academy Award for Best Actor, punched and cursed at host Chris Rock, who joked about his wife. Will is Jada Pinkett. In his emotional speech shortly after, the tearful Will Smith apologized – though not directly to Chris Rock. “I want to apologize to the Academy. I want to apologize to all the nominees. This is a beautiful moment and I am not crying because I won the award. I am not the award winner. It’s about being able to shine.” He said, “The art of imitating life. I look like the crazy dad, like they said Richard Williams. Love will make you do crazy things.”
In a loaded speech, Will Smith said, “I was called in my life to love people and protect people and be a river for my people. I know what to do. we do, you have to be able to abuse. you have to be able to get people talking about you crazy You have to smile and you have to pretend it’s okay.”
Will Smith also revealed what fellow Best Actor nominee Denzel Washington told him during a commercial break following his conflict with Chris Rock. “Thank you, Dee. A few minutes ago, Denzel said, ‘At your peak, be careful, that’s when the devil comes looking for you,'” Will Smith said.
Chris Rock angered Will Smith by making a GI Jane joke about Jada Pinkett, apparently alluding to her shaved head. As Jada rolled his eyes, Will walked up to the stage, slapped Chris, got back in his seat, and yelled, “Get my wife’s name out of your mouth.” Chris Rock told the audience, “Will Smith just beat me to death. It was a GI Jane joke. It was the greatest night in television history.”
