Pagani’s concept for the Utopia (for now) is a car without an electric motor and a touchscreen of any kind.
The Pagani Utopia is the third generation of the Italian carmaker, following the Zonda launched in 1999 and the Huayra, first launched in 2011.
Behind the passenger compartment is a twin-turbo V12 engine that Pagani says has been “developed on a reservation basis” by Mercedes-AMG. 12 cylinder engine developed 635kW at 6000 rpm and 1100Nm between 2800 and 5900 rpm.
It drives the rear wheels through a horizontally mounted seven-speed automatic transmission. Pagani points out that they decided not to use a dual-clutch transmission because it is heavier and “robs the driver of the ability to set the vehicle’s acceleration”.
A seven-speed manual transmission specially developed to handle the engine’s mountain of torque is also available.
No performance numbers have been announced at this stage, but with a dry weight of 1280kg, the Utopia should fit in this department.
The Utopia has a monocoque body made from a mixture of carbon fiber and titanium, with chrome molybdenum steel front and rear subframes.
Pagani says the Utopia’s torsional stiffness is up at least 10.5% over the upcoming Huayra.
While the exterior is a clear evolution of the design used on the Zonda and Huayra, it’s all new and has 20 percent fewer parts than before.
Up front there are cooling ducts integrated into the front splitter and bonnet, and one-piece headlights. Along the sides, the sills have been twisted and folded to improve side airflow.
At the rear there is the company’s signature four-pipe exhaust, while the taillights are said to be inspired by jet turbines.
At the front, the Utopia uses 21-inch forged aluminum alloy wheels that look unique with Pirelli P-Zero Corsa 265/35 tires developed specifically for the car, while at the rear are 22-inch wheels with tires. 325/30 rubber.
The bike features an independent double wishbone suspension with torsion springs at both ends, as well as semi-active shock absorbers to provide both handling and ride comfort.
Possibility to stop is thanks to ventilated carbon-ceramic Brembo brakes, with 410mm discs at the front paired with six-piston calipers, and the 390mm rear unit using four-piston calipers.
In an increasingly digital world, Pagani’s unique take on current trends is the digital display between the analog speedometer and the tachometer.
The interior is said to be inspired by the aesthetics of leather goods and watches from the 1950s-1960s.
In addition to the steering wheel machined from a single block of aluminum, the cabin features an elaborate gearshift lever and ambient lighting around all of the main control housings.
Only 99 coupes will be produced during Utopia’s initial production, and all have been voiced. If the Zonda and Huayra are any guide, there will be special edition models and future Utopia roadsters.
