Pakistan boat tragedy: 10 children killed and seven injured

Ten children were killed and seven injured when a boat capsized on a lake in the north Pakistan Sunday, police said.
The boat was carrying 25 to 30 students when it capsized on Tanda Dam Kohat, a lake in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. Rescue operations continued, police said.
Although mass drownings are common in the country, caused by overcrowded, worn-out ships that capsized in the country’s waters, many people in Pakistan do not know how to swim.
Women are especially vulnerable in these situations because they often wear clothing that covers their bodies, which makes them heavy in the water, and a conservative culture that discourages them from learning to swim.
The tragedy occurred on the same day as a bus crash in southern Pakistan that left 39 people dead.
