Pentagon wants to purchase 1700 tactical missiles
The annual U.S. Defense Policy Bill, or Defense Authorization Act, calls for help replenishing the Pentagon’s missile supply.
The new Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) agreement for Fiscal Year 2023 will add ammunition and missile supplies, including the Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) short-range ballistic missiles ).
The bill would authorize the Department of Defense to begin purchasing and using multi-year contracts for 1,700 ATACMS missiles and 700 HIMARS launchers.

Clearly, the Pentagon has addressed the lessons learned from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and will purchase more weapons and ammunition to stockpile for future conflict.
ATACMS was developed in 1991 to provide the Army with a long-range tactical artillery missile. Using the same precision launch vehicle as other Army rockets and missiles, the ATACMS has a long history of use and has been extensively tested over many years.
The missiles were used extensively in both Operation Desert Storm (1991) and in Operation Free Iraq (2003) land wars to shape the operations of the joint force, the Task Force. Joint Special Warfare and Army Composition Command operational levels. There is one missile per launcher (missile shell) with two per launch tube in the M270/M270A1 Multiple Rocket Launch System and one in the M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System launcher.
