People Rally Behind Indian Restaurant in Sydney
There is currently a battle between residents in Sydney, Australia and the local city council to allow an iconic Indian Restaurant to stay open until 3am. The restaurant, called Indian Home Diner, has been around for nearly a decade and has become a favorite among those who frequent the clubs and bars late at night. Ideally located on a Sydney street, most people stop by the restaurant on their way home from a night of drinking.
About a month ago, the local city council rejected owner Robert Chowdury’s proposal to officially extend his dinner hours to 3 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays because of his permit. expired. According to Sydney Morning Herald, Council confirmed that in March 2020 Chowdury was allowed to open its restaurants until 3am on Fridays and Saturdays for a period of 12 months, but was required to exercise crowd control due to COVID-19 . After the specified time limit, he continued to open his restaurant and applied for a permanent extension of working hours, but was refused.
The Sydney Morning Herald The report said some members of Congress quickly brought up the matter to try to save the restaurant with congressman Dave Sharma saying, “This is a tragedy. I will fight to restore IHD (Indian Home Dinner) hours. ”
A popular Instagram page called bondi_lines also came up with a reason to publish a post with a photo that reads “Saving Indian dinner at home”. An excerpt from the post reads: “Indian Home Dinner (IHD) holds a very special place in our hearts. The handcrafted Indian dishes with love that you can taste make it the premier late-night food hub in the world. Although most famous for its #5 Garlic Cheese Naan Kebab with Alloo Chop, it is not just a restaurant but a community. The page even started a Transfer money to me campaign to try and save diner and has encouraged followers to donate.
The owner, Robert Chowdury, filed a petition with the District Attorney’s Office to challenge the board’s rule.
