Via Jack Tiernan: Caleb Plant vs. David Benavidez, the winner of their clash early next year, will be a mandatory WBC for champion Canelo Alvarez.
Earlier today, Benavidez and Plant announced to their followers on Instagram that they would be fighting next. It will be interesting to see how this fight plays out if the two fight early next year.
Plant has a technical advantage in boxing skills, but Benavidez is bigger, stronger, faster, and younger. Caleb is about to have a shock 9th-round knockout win over Anthony Dirrell on October 15, but that’s no sign that he’s suddenly growing in strength.
It’s like Dirrell didn’t sink and left himself with a perfect left hook.
Former super-middleweight champion IBF Plant (22-1, 13 KOs) credited the match that happened, saying: “I went and made it happen. Signed contract. See you early next year.“
Ideally, Canelo (58-2-2, 39 KOs) would do the right thing and defend the winner Plant-Benavidez without the World Boxing Council stepping in and ordering the fight and stripped of the title. His WBC if he refuses to face them.
We know that Canelo doesn’t mind fighting Plant, 30, as he not only fought him but knocked him out in round 11 last November.
It is believed that Canelo did not want to join the fight with Benavidez. So if he wins Plant, Canelo will either continue to ignore him or drop WBC if he isn’t stripped from him first.
If Canelo chooses not to face the winner for whatever reason, it will be interesting to see if the WBC ultimately orders him to defend against compulsion.
God knows, Benavidez (26-0.23 KOs), the WBC currently required, waited two years to get a title.
During that time, the WBC did not move to order Canelo to defend against Benavidez, and it is unclear what their reasons were for not doing so.

The fact that Benavidez views Plant negatively is not a big revelation as he feels that he should have fought him already. Plants have a different look. He said he was ready to fight Benavidez in the past, but nothing happened.
