PlatinumGames ‘Extremely Apologetic’ About Closing Down Babylon, But No Live Service Plan Changes
PlatinumGames says it regrets the imminent closure of Babylon’s Fall servers, but also notes that it won’t affect any future live service plans.
In one Interview with VGCPlatinumGames CEO Atsushi Inaba said, “The only thing we can comment here on the closure The Fall of Babylon service itself, is that this unfortunate conclusion may have caused some disappointment, perhaps even anger, among our devoted fans and players. “
He continued, “And any disappointment we may have caused to our fan base is something we deeply regret, the fact that we have let people down. My dedicated fan feels the same way as a developer. Providing any affection other than enjoyment and fun in our creations to players is something that we are not satisfied with in the slightest as a developer. “
Inaba, unfortunately, couldn’t go into any specifics about Babylon’s Fall’s closure, noting that Square Enix had to reveal any more details about it.
However, despite the game’s failure, PlatinumGames still wants to invest in live service games. “There’s a lot that we’ve learned from this experience, and it doesn’t change our plans or prospects going forward in terms of doing live service games. Live service games are definitely something that we want to do and work towards moving forward,” Inaba explained.
He further explains that live-serve games have two pillars: exciting gameplay mechanics and live-serve elements. Both need to be closely linked to create a good experience.
He concludes, “On the other hand, if one of these things is valued more than the other, or if they are not connected, things often don’t turn out the way we would like. We want to focus on keeping that link and the balance between those two pillars moving forward.”
Babylon’s Fall was released earlier this year in February to negative reviewand the studio recently announced that online server will be closed one year later on February 28, 2023.
