Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday chaired a high-level meeting to review efforts to bring back Indians stranded in Ukraine.
The meeting was attended by Trade & Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, Foreign Minister Harsh Vardhan Shringla, National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval and senior officials.
This is the fifth review meeting chaired by the Prime Minister on the ongoing efforts of Operation Ganga to return Indians from Ukraine amid Russia’s military operations.
At the virtual meeting of Quad leaders on Thursday, Prime Minister Modi “emphasized the need to return to the path of dialogue and diplomacy” to have a way forward in the Ukraine crisis. In his speech, Prime Minister Modi also reiterated the importance of observing the UN Charter, international law and respecting sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The center has stepped up efforts to evacuate Indian nationals trapped in Ukraine.
The government has also deployed “special envoys” to four neighboring countries bordering Ukraine to coordinate and monitor the evacuation of Indian citizens.
Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri will oversee evacuation efforts in Hungary, Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju in Slovakia, Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia in Romania and Transport Minister Road & Highway Traffic and Civil Aviation Gen VK Singh in Poland.
18,000 Indian nationals have left Ukraine since the first announcement of the travel of the Indian Embassy in Ukraine, the foreign ministry said on Thursday.
