Punjab minister asks for election to be postponed for 6 days

Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi has urged the Election Commission of India to postpone the February 14 elections by six days in view of Guru Ravidas Jayanti.
Voting for Punjab’s 117 council seats will be held on 14 February and the counting of votes will take place on 10 March.
In a letter to Chief Election Commissioner Sushil Chandra, Mr. Channi wrote that some representatives of the Scheduled Actors community, which contributes about 32% of the state’s population, announced that the date of birth of Guru Ravidas falls in February. 16.
Mr. Channi wrote: “On this occasion, a large number of SC (Scheduled Regime) devotees (about 200,000) from the state are likely to visit Banaras in Uttar Pradesh from 10-16 February.
“In such a situation, many people from this community would not be able to vote for state parliament, which is their constitutional right,” he said in the January 13 letter.
“They have requested that the voting date can be extended in such a way that they can visit Banaras from February 10 to February 16 as well as participate in the council elections,” he said.
Mr. Channi said, “Voting for the Punjab Parliament 2022 elections is considered fair and appropriate, which can be postponed for at least six days, allowing around 200,000 people to use their right to vote. vote for the State Legislative Assembly.”
Earlier, Jasvir Singh Garhi, head of the Bahujan Samaj party, Jasvir Singh Garhi, also asked the Election Commission to postpone the polls from February 14 to February 20.
