Queen Elizabeth saw the smile in the last photo before she died
Queen Elizabeth II passed away peacefully on Thursday at her Scottish home, Balmoral Castle, aged 96, surrounded by her family. A solemn final photograph of the queen shows the long-reigning monarch smiling and clutching a cane as he stands by a fireplace at Balmoral Castle. The picture was clicked on Tuesday, two days before her death, when she officially appointed Liz Truss as Britain’s new Prime Minister. It was clicked on by photographer Jane Barlow.
Wearing a plaid dress, gray cardigan and light blue button-down, the queen is seen smiling for the camera. The iconic ceremony took place at Balmoral’s retreat in the Scottish Highlands, when the queen was said to be unfit to return to London due to ill health.
On Monday, Buckingham Palace said, “The Queen met the appropriate Honorary MP Elizabeth Truss today and asked her to form a new administration.”

On Thursday night, a notice posted on the gates of Buckingham Palace read: “The Queen passed away peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and Queen will stay at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow. “
Charles, 73, became monarch immediately following the death of his mother on Thursday, followed by tributes from around the world.
Muffled church bells will ring at Westminster Abbey, St Paul’s Cathedral and Windsor Castle, among others, and Confederate flags will fly at half-mast during 10 days of mourning in England.
Ms Truss and other senior ministers will attend a public memorial service at St Paul’s, while the UK Parliament will begin two special days of remembrance.
