Quick hits
Wonderful thing: Standard safety features; very high quality interior materials
Good: Deep acceleration; the fuel-saving potential and ecological flexibility of the plug-in hybrid powertrain
Not so good: Complex touch screen controls; Optional equipment quickly increases the bottom price; not quite as nimble or sporty as some performance-focused competitors
CG says:
We’re no strangers to plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and we’ve found that determining any kind of fuel economy from the ground up with PHEVs is difficult. This is because the charging opportunities — and the total mileage driven — are different for every consumer, and it turns out, so are every Consumer Guide editor. For this reason, our review of the 2022 Volvo XC60 Charger, seen here in the Top Text trim, includes an asterisk next to our reported mileage above. Plus in a moment.
The XC60 Recharge hybrid system has been significantly upgraded for 2022 and boasts greater battery range and, as a result, more power. For the ’22, the Recharge battery was increased in capacity from 11.6 to 18.8 kWh, extending the range from 19 to 35 miles, so extended range was added to the vehicle’s own name. Note that “standard range” versions of the 2022 XC60 recharge are also available, but will not be offered for 2023.
First turn: 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe
With an increase in battery capacity, the capacity will increase from 400 to 455. Not the standard Recharge feature for muscles, but the Extended-Range version offers strong acceleration and instant power supply. circuit.
The extra range and power didn’t hurt the XC60 Recharge’s overall goodness, and Volvo’s compact crossover remains a good four-passenger, boasting a spacious, well-equipped cabin comfort, excellent ride quality and handling just enough to match other European cars in its class. Test drive: Lexus NX 450h + F Sport 2022
As for our fuel economy, plugged in as often as possible, we averaged 37.0 mpg over 998 miles. Here’s the deal, that number includes the 468-mile Chicago-Indianapolis-Chicago road trip of which there is no charge. City-only fuel economy comes in at just 27.9 mpg — significantly reducing our reported average mileage. Excluding road trips, however, and our average mileage rose to 57.5 mpg, which isn’t too far from the EPA’s estimates.
Test drive: Lincoln Corsair Grand Touring 2021
At more than $72,000, the XC60 Recharge in the extended-rated inscription trim is pricey, but the extra range and premium cabin do a lot to help justify the price. To extract maximum value from your plug-in hybrid, commit to plugging in as often as possible. There’s no point in carrying around a heavy, expensive battery if you’re not making good use of it.
