Quick hits
Wonderful thing: Satisfying acceleration from the V6; comfortable ride
Good: Good cargo capacity in relatively compact exterior dimensions; high-end interior decoration features
Not so good: Some infotainment controls are slow to respond; tedious climate control; thick roof columns obstruct rear visibility; disappointingly observed fuel economy; spending options that increase the final price
CG says:
The most expensive member of the 2022 Cadillac XT5 premium midsize SUV family is the Sport with a standard V6 engine, but it’s not necessary to shell out the $57,090 starting price to get the 3.6-liter engine. The engine is a $1000 option for the XT5 Premium Luxury, so you can get a front-wheel drive model for $50,990 (with delivery) or a four-wheel drive job for $52,990 with all what Caddy offers for this product line.
For that price, you won’t get the standard 20-inch Sport alloy wheels, Brembo front brakes, performance suspension, dual-clutch “Sport Control” all-wheel drive, or features. exterior and interior. Did you know, some of them are available for Premium Luxury. Consumer Guide sampled the V6 AWD Premium engine that comes with 20-inch wheels (instead of the base 18) and real-time damping suspension (a component of the extended Platinum option package). Of course, after all that was added—poof!—Have your price advantage. Indeed, CG’s widely selected test truck went up to $67,965 when the cash register stopped ringing.

All in all, this iteration of the XT5 isn’t far from the last CG test, a 2020 Sport. Dimensions haven’t changed, so space remains the same: roomy in the front but little headroom on the second row of seats big enough to accommodate three adults, plus up to 63 cubic feet of cargo space when 60. /40- the rear seats split and recede. For personal items, there’s a large glove box, small control box and door pockets (but with floor space opening under the dashboard) and storage pockets on the backs of the front seats. The commendable ride comfort is particularly unaffected by road imperfections, and even if the word “aggressive” isn’t in the XT5’s vocabulary, it’s at least easy to drive.

The fine-tuned V6 produces 310 hp at 6600 rpm and 271 lb-ft of torque at 5000 rpm going through a nine-speed automatic transmission – a huge jump over 235 hp and 258 lb-ft from the standard 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. While the revs had to go up a bit before all the twists were available, one of our editors was able to coax a squeal from the front tire from a good kick of the pedal at full stop. whole. Automatic engine stop/start feature to save gas and deactivate cylinders is built-in. The EPA rates the V6 AWD XT5 at 18 mpg city, 26 mpg highway, and 21 mpg combined. Our test scored 18.1 mpg with 60 percent city driving.

The $4850 Platinum package installs semi-aniline leather seats, a leather-wrapped instrument panel, leather dashboard and door trims, and a microfiber headboard for a truly luxurious ambience. Then that luxurious fantasy world rushes into the harsh reality of cheap plastic in the lower areas of the interior.
The current Cadillac User Experience (CUE) infotainment system — optimized in the test vehicle with a 14-speaker Bose audio and navigation system — draws a clear line between convenience and distraction-free. The control panel-mounted remote control dial can be used to activate functional “zones” on the information display. Luxury brands love these hand/eye coordination testers more than we do. But the 8-inch screen is also a touch screen that can work more directly. However, response to some screen touches is slow, and the same can be said of the tactile climate controls that are pressurized and precise to function properly. Other system elements are Apple CarPlay/Android Auto smartphone connectivity (wireless from year 21), satellite radio, a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, and wireless charging.

Some other standard features to note are a panoramic sunroof, a hands-free lifting gate, a rear “cargo fence” that can be adjusted on the rails and neatly folds into a foam organizer under the load floor; remote start, keyless entry and start, forward collision warning and pedestrian braking, lane keep assist and rear cross traffic alert. Among the many add-ons for testers are adaptive cruise control with a head-up display, three-zone climate control, ventilated front seats and heated rear seats.
The XT5 has its quirks and minor flaws. Still, it’s roomy, funky with a V6 engine, and cost competitive in its class — and much cheaper at its top tier.
