Rajya Sabha Chairman Venkaiah Naidu when Protests force the National Assembly Session to end
New Delhi:
The Rajya Sabha has been adjourned indefinitely today, one day ahead of its original schedule, marking the end of the Winter Session of Parliament. The session in Lok Sabha also ended. Both Rajya Sabha President Venkaiah Naidu and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla decided to end the session amid constant opposition from the opposition.
Immediately after the publication of the listed papers and reports, Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu suspended the house indefinitely. The Senate saw some disruption in session after 12 opposition party members were suspended for their “unruly” behavior during the previous session in August.
Chairman Venkaiah Naidu said: “Rajya Sabha is operating far below its potential. “I ask you to introspect and reflect on how this session can be different and better. I take a very critical view,” Naidu added in his address to MPs.
Rajya Sabha has seen continuous protests by the Opposition over the suspension of 12 MPs as well as demands for the dismissal of junior Home Minister for Lakhimpur Kheri violence. The session also saw objections to the hasty approach to passing bills, particularly a key electoral reform bill that would require linking voter ID cards to Aadhaar cards.
The Winter Session had 18 sessions and saw the passage of important legislation such as the Farm Law Repeal Bill and the Elections (Amendment) Bill.
The session took 18 hours and 48 minutes as opposition members interrupted on a range of issues such as price increases and violence in Lakhimpur Kheri.
Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla said the lower house saw a record yield of 204% on December 2.
The winter session of Congress began on November 29 and is scheduled to end on December 23.
