Rangers-Napoli move to Champions League due to lack of security staff after Queen’s death
Rangers‘The match against the Champions League Naples UEFA said Sunday it had been postponed by one day due to a lack of adequate security staff following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
The Queen passed away at the age of 96 on Thursday, leading to a host of different sports in England being postponed over the weekend, including Premier League and English Football League matches.
UEFA also said Napoli fans would not be able to attend the match at Rangers’ Ibrox Stadium, while Rangers supporters would not be allowed to attend the second leg “because of a matter of fair play.”
“[The game] has been rescheduled for Wednesday, September 14 at 21.00 CET [8pm BST, 3pm ET]. This is due to severe police resource constraints and organizational problems related to ongoing events,” UEFA said.
“Away fans will not be allowed to attend the matches, and for the sake of sporting fairness, Rangers fans will not be allowed to attend the second leg in Napoli.”
The UK’s National Police Chiefs Council (NPCC) said it was a unique situation.
“Following the decision of the Premier League and EFL to cancel matches this weekend, we will be working with football clubs to try and ensure that … matches can be played safely. balance with the need to support national events and day-to-day policy implementation,” an NPCC spokesperson said.
Rangers started their Champions League campaign with a 4-0 defeat to Ajax while Napoli beat Liverpool 4-1 at home.
