Rare original copy of US Constitution to be auctioned for $43 million
New York, USA:
An extremely rare original copy of the US constitution sold on Thursday for $43 million – a world record for a historic document at auction, Sotheby’s said.
It is one of 11 known surviving copies of the charter of the United States, signed on September 17, 1787 in Philadelphia’s Independence Hall by the founding fathers of the United States, including George Washington, Benjamin Franklin and James Madison and ratified the following year.
The winner of the bid was not immediately determined.
A group of crypto investors raised $40 million to purchase documents but failed to secure the documents, the consortium said.
A Sotheby’s spokesman said the sale – for $43.2 million including commissions – was a world record for a historic document put up for auction.
Selby Kiffer, an expert on manuscripts and antique books at Sotheby’s, said in September that the copy was probably part of the 500 edition printed the night before the signing.
This is the only one in private hands, Kiffer said.
