Real Madrid demand answers to ‘unfortunate events’ at Champions League final
Real Madrid have demanded answers to the “unfortunate sequence of events” at the Champions League final against Liverpool in Paris on May 28.
They also wanted to know why the Stade de France was chosen as the venue for the match and who was “responsible for leaving the fans abandoned and defenseless”.
A statement from Real Madrid said: “Football has conveyed to the world an image far different from the values and goals it should pursue.
The Spanish team won the final 1-0.
However, the match was delayed by more than half an hour and Liverpool fans described heavy policing, organizational chaos and overcrowding at the exciting match, which was moved to the Stade de France from St. Petersburg after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Liverpool CEO Billy Hogan French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin called the England fan’s comments “disgraceful” and that, after speaking with his Real Madrid counterpart, the Spanish club’s supporters also had problems.
In its statement, Real Madrid cited “unfortunate events” that had taken place “around and at the entrances to the Stade de France, and even inside the stadium itself” and that its fans they are “victims of the foregoing events”.
They added: “We would like to know the reasons why this venue was chosen to host the final and the criteria used, taking into account the experience of the day.
“Furthermore, we are calling for answers and explanations to identify those responsible for leaving fans abandoned and unprotected. Fans in general have consistently exhibited behavior exemplary.”
European football’s governing body, Uefa, commissioned an independent report on what happened in the final.
French authorities have blamed ticket fraud and accused football club Liverpool of failing to control their fans, although the supporters are also reported to have been targeted by local gangs.
Real Madrid said: “We believe that what should have been a great football festival for all the fans attending the match, quickly turned into a chain of unfortunate events that caused worldwide outrage.
“It is clear from the revealing images posted by the media that some fans have been attacked, harassed, assaulted and robbed of property in violent costumes.
“These incidents continue to occur when they are traveling in cars or buses, causing concern for their physical health. Some fans have even spent the night in hospital due to their injuries.”
The club added: “Our fans and supporters deserve a response and those responsible must be held accountable for events like this to be removed from football and sport in general. .”
