“A lot of horses have been sold to varying degrees,” said Tod Wojciechowski, Sales Director of OBS. “That’s always a good thing, especially for the last sale of the year.”
A total of 653 ponies were sold in the June sale with a total value of $26,986,500 – eclipsing the record $24,626,450 set when 567 horses sold for $24,626,450 dollars at the 2021 auction. The median was $41,327 – just 4.8% down from last year’s record $43,433.
The average held steady at $25,000 per session over the three selling sessions to top the previous record of $20,000.

The buyback rate of the sale is 19%. The ratio was 18.2% at the end of the 2021 sale before falling to 17.2% when after-sales transactions are included.
“I think June continues to show this is an independent drop. It has its own legs,” says Wojciechowski. “A lot of quality horses appear in this sale.”
Peter Miller has been busy making rounds on OBS’s sales base all week, and the trainer was finally on board with three purchases on Thursday, led by a $200,000 daughter la of Good magic (hip 984).

De Meric Sales was the lead shipper in the June sale, with 28 chicks selling for $1,889,000.
“It’s been a great season for all of us,” said Tristan de Meric. “The market has rallied strongly during this drop. This sale took a while to warm up, but yesterday and today feel better.”
When asked to rate the quality of the season for his Wavertree Stables shipment, Ciaran Dunne said, “Overall, it’s been a good year. It doesn’t get easier, but it doesn’t have to. We already have enough highlights to paint over them. When the dust settles and we look back on it, it will be a good year.”
When asked if he sees a stronger middle market in 2021, Dunne said: “If so, I haven’t. It’s a similar thing. We need two or three horses to carry the weight of the rest. And then there’s the matter of trading horses to stop paying the bills. I think overall, we did a good job of that. Our clearance rate has been very strong. We got our lumps where we needed them to go. “
