Redefining figure skating with Briana King and Eunice Chang
King Briana: I grew up in Los Angeles, so I always revolved around skateboarding. People skate around me. My teacher even skates. So I got on the skateboard, but it wasn’t a welcoming environment. I got out of it because I didn’t feel comfortable. I don’t feel safe. I don’t feel seen. Then five years ago, I moved to New York City and met Skate Kitchen girls – it’s a bunch of Black girls – and I was like, Okay, this is me. These are people like me. These are the people who are welcoming. They are very friendly. They are like, This is a new girl, we will make sure she is completely comfortable. Since then, we boomed.
