Regina Transit routes expand to Costco and Aurora neighbourhood – Regina
The City of Regina is expanding a transit route to better serve the eastern Aurora area of the city.
The area includes some of Regina’s busiest businesses including Costco, Landmark Cinemas, Staples and more.
As of August 28, Route 50 Victoria Express now extends east down Victoria Avenue, terminating in Aurora.
The route will extend from Lorne Street and Victoria Avenue to Aurora Avenue and Anaquod Road, with several stops including downtown, Victoria Square Shopping Centre, Superstore East and Costco.
The city’s transportation director Brad Bells said the route is a much-needed service that people are asking for.
“Both the workers and the residents in public, they want us out of here,” Bells said. “And they’re delighted to have a service today and we’ve seen some passengers.”
The line will run Monday to Saturday from 6am to 1am and Sundays and public holidays from 8am to 6pm
The city has also announced all youth 13 and under will be able to ride public transit for free.
“That was one of our recommendations from the transit master plan that was approved by the board over the summer,” Bells said. “We felt that if we could give our youth a chance, they would become lifelong transit members.”
Teens under 13 will not require identification to get a free ride.
Bells said free rides for teenagers have already been made in many other cities in Canada. He hopes providing services in Regina will help families who may not be able to afford transportation.
“That’s one of the threats we hear from families, you have a family with four kids and you can’t pay,” Bells said. “Now if you can take your family for free, it’s a lot more affordable. So we expect the number of riders 13 and under to increase more than we saw when we collected the toll. “
