Via Dan Ambrose: Eddie Hearn criticized David Benavidez & Jermall Charlo today saying that fans would rather watch Canelo Alvarez play them than 40-year-old Gennadiy Golovkin at this point.
Golovkin is a good boxer, but he is not seen as having much of a chance of beating Canelo. Fans wanted to see Charlo and Benavidez play against Canelo because they thought they would have an excellent shot to win.
Hearn doesn’t seem to like being told the truth, so instead of accepting what the boxing public loves for Canelo, he opted to shoot at the records of Benavidez (26-0.23 KOs) and Charlo (32 -0.22 KOs).
True, Benavidez and Charlo haven’t battled all of the big names Canelo has had during his 17-year professional career, but they don’t have the edge of out-of-door popularity the Mexican star has to give. allowing them to fight with the same kind of opposition.
Some people think that Canelo’s red hair and talent helped him get an early career. Canelo is capable, but he was never undefeated, as we saw in his fights with Floyd Mayweather Jr, Austin Trout, Erislandy Lara, Gennadiy Golovkin x 2 and Dmitry Bivol.
“All we want is to see [Jermall] Charlo fights Gennadiy Golovkin, and they won’t do it either,” Eddie Hearn told Against TV Hub when he said that boxing fans would rather watch Canelo Alvarez vs Jermall Charlo and David Benavidez than Gennadiy Golovkin.
“These people, Charlo, Benavidez, they are not fighting with anyone at all. How can you criticize Canelo Alvarez’s resume and not criticize Charlo and Benavidez? “Hearn continued.
“Their resumes are jokes, and I don’t even think Benavidez wants a joke resume. Charlo, I don’t know, but I don’t think he’s pushing. There’s something wrong with these people standing up and saying, ‘Give me this.’
“Benavidez, I think he’s a guy who wants legacy, he wants big fights, but give them to him.
“The Caleb Factory Is Fighting [Anthony] Dirrell. It was a good fight, but we wanted to see Benavidez-Plant and Plant-Charlo. Why not? That’s not my side of the street,” Hearn said when asked why these scuffles were happening.
