Reynolds, McElhenney watch Wrexham collapse in FA Trophy final at Wembley ahead of promotion playoff
Just a year after completing their takeover of non-league Wrexham, owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenny were at Wembley on Sunday to watch their club play in the cup final. The FA Trophy is finally in Bromley’s hands, thanks to Michael Cheek’s 64th-minute goal, but for many disloyal to the two National League clubs, the real draw lies in the directors’ box .
That’s where Reynolds and McElhenney can be found. The exact pair haven’t kept a low profile since buying the Welsh club, and have, in fact, announced a trove of documents called “Welcome to Wrexham” will be coming to FX and Hulu later this year.
Their outing in London isn’t conspicuous either. Reynolds and McElhenney partners Blake Lively and Kaitlin Olson joined them in the owner’s apartment, respectively. So are fellow club owners David Beckham and Will Ferrell, who own shares in the MLS teams Inter Miami and LAFC respectively.
Star power in the stands likely won’t do much for Wrexham fans bitterly missed out on a silverware – something the club last experienced in 2013, when they advanced this FA Cup. Thankfully, for those in north-east Wales, there’s still plenty to play for this season: Wrexham will face Notts County or Grimsby on Saturday in the National League promotion playoff semi-final.
One win there, and another in the final at West Ham’s London Stadium next Saturday, and Reynolds and McElhenney’s team will advance to the Football League and a place in League Two.
