The Subaru Legacy – like Free known outside of Australia – will withdraw from the car market as buyers now overwhelmingly prefer crossovers over sedans.
Overnight Subaru of America confirmed production of the seventh-generation Legacy sedan will end in the second quarter of 2025.
The current Legacy went into production in 2020, but unlike previous versions, it was only produced in the US and exclusively in left-hand drive form. This means Liberty's Australian run ended at the end of 2020.

According to Subaru, the company has sold 1.3 million Legacy sedans in the US. It also claims 94% of all Legacy sedans sold in the US over the past 10 years are still running.
Although the Legacy/Liberty will soon be discontinued, some of its spirit and most of its genes will live on with the Outback, which is still produced in Indiana and Japan.
Data from Good car Bad car shows that Subaru sold 25,509 Legacy vehicles in the US in 2023, representing just 4.0% of the company's total US sales (632,083).
Legacy has been outsold by Remote area (161,812), Go through (159,193), forester (152,566), Ascent (60,543) and Impreza (34,719). However, it got through WRX (24,681) and BRZ (4188).
It also lags behind the rest of the midsize sedan segment, incl Toyota Camry (290,649), Honda is suitable (197,947), Chevrolet Malibu (130,341) and Nissan Altima (128,030).
