The Queensland Government says speed cameras at road work zones will finally start issuing fines, more than 18 months after they were first deployed.
ABC News reports that the cameras are yet to issue fines even though, according to a Ministry of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) spokesperson, they have recorded “vehicle speed data”.
“During operational testing and further industry engagement, the industry requested a solution that could be deployed at short-term roadworks,” a TMR spokesperson said.
“A replacement camera was then sourced and is currently being installed.
“Following the conclusion of operational testing, it is expected that road construction cameras will begin issuing violation notices in May 2024.”
First announced in August 2021, the Government announced in August 2022 the cameras will be released in September of that year along with new school zone speed cameras.
It also confirmed that roadworks cameras will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week – unlike school zone cameras, which only operate during times specified on school zone signs.
TMR said it has been liaising with industry to identify roadworks where speeding is causing safety issues for workers.
The cameras – both roadworks units located on a converted excavator and school zone units integrated into permanent signs – are part of the same pilot program, planned completed in June 2025.
But it's not just roadworks cameras whose rollout has been delayed, with the Government confirming in July 2023 that school zone cameras was affected by technical issuesresulting in no fines for a period of seven months.

TMR later confirmed these cameras had issued more than 10,000 fines since going into operation.
“The pilot program will be evaluated to determine the road safety benefits and technical performance of the technology,” a TMR spokesperson said. ABC News.
