Robbie Davies Jr will face former world champion Sergey Lipinets on May 8
ROBBIE DAVIES JR is going across the pond for his next fight and does it with a new coach.
The 34-year-old Liverpudlian will face former IBF super lightweight champion Sergey Lipinets on May 8 at ProBox TV Event Center in Plant City, Florida. Davies Jr.'s defeat could bring down the curtain on his 11-year career.
Lipinets, 17-3-1 (13), and Davies Jr, 23-4 (15), will fight at a catchweight of 143 lbs in the main event scheduled to last 10 rounds.
“I just want to fight real battles,” Davies Jr. said Boxing news.
“You won't be more decent than him [Lipinets]. The winner moves on and the loser… well, if I lose maybe I'll call it [a day] Later. But I have no intention of losing.”
Traveling to America with the Scouser will be famous Manc Anthony Crolla, who has been training the former British and European 140-pound champion over the past few months. Shane McGuigan has previously been a corner but Davies Jr is looking to be closer to his young family rather than having to travel further distances to London for training.
Davies Jr.'s next fight will come after a year away from the ring. After losing to Gabriel Gollaz Venezuela in February 2021, he bounced back with three wins before facing Darragh Foley in Liverpool 13 months ago. However, all hopes of winning at home were dashed in the third round when the Englishman gave way. This was the result of leg and ankle injuries sustained in the previous training session after being abandoned by Foley. He was eventually taken to Aintree Hospital to undergo surgery.
Meanwhile, Lipinets will look to bounce back from their second loss in three matches after Michel Rivera beat the Kazakh five months ago. The 35-year-old has also suffered losses to top talents Jaron Ennis and Mikey Garcia and presents a tough test for Davies Jr in the latter stages of his career. Lipinet's only world championship came in November 2017 when he edged Akhiro Kondo to win the vacant IBF 10-stone belt. However, his reign was short-lived after Mikey Garcia successfully carried “Samurai” to multiple points in March 2018.
