Ryan Garcia was 3.2 pounds overweight for his fight with Devin Haney
WIDELY concerned about Ryan Garcia making weight were confirmed late Friday morning when his troubled opponent weighed 3.2 pounds too much in his 140-pound title bout with Devin Haney.
Garcia officially weighed 143.2 pounds behind closed doors when he stepped on the New York State Athletic Commission scale. Haney met his contractual obligation by giving weight to their DAZN Pay-Per-View main event.
At the time this story was posted, it was unclear whether Garcia would attempt to lose as much weight within the hour allowed by the NYSAC to get him back to weighing in at the ultra-lightweight limit of 140 pounds or less. . Regardless, Garcia is expected to pay fines to NYSAC and Haney and will continue with their 12-round main event at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
Haney (31-0, 15 KOs), of Henderson, Nevada, and Garcia (24-1, 20 KOs), of Victorville, California, are scheduled to participate in the weigh-in ceremony at Barclays Center at 7 p.m. pm BST, 2 pm ET.
At 5:44 p.m. Golden Boy Promotions released the following statement:
“Ryan has considered the weight of his contract. He would honor the handshake at his final press conference yesterday. We are fighting.”
