SAG Awards 2022: Michael Douglas, Shari Belafonte and others supporting Ukraine on the red carpet
Fashion has always been used as an essential tool for making strong political statement, impregnated with sophistication and power. That’s exactly what we witnessed at the 28th edition of Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards on Sunday night, in which a series of celebrities supported Ukraine amid Russia’s continued invasion of the Eastern European country.
Stars like Tyler Perry, Michael Douglas and Jon Bernthal among others have expressed their solidarity with Ukraine with their accessories, using the red carpet as a stage to amplify their vocals.
American actor and producer Michael Douglas, who has been awarded many prestigious awards in the past, chose blue and yellow pocket squares, representing the colors of the Ukrainian flag, on Red carpet.
“This is an acknowledgment of what is happening in Ukraine. It is just an extraordinary democracy, and if there is any reason to realize that the separation between democracy and autocracy or dictatorship, we now seem to have forgotten that, hopefully this is a reminder of the value of that,” he said. On the other hand, Perry, 52, adorned her dashing look with a blue and gold ribbon, pinned on fleece jacket. Jon Bernthal, too, wears a similar ribbon with his outfit.
Perry and Bernthal’s stylist Ilaria Urbinati took to Instagram to share pictures of ribbon the two of them wore to the event. “SAG awards for #standwithukraine prep,” she captioned the post.
The Morning Show star Shari Belafonte also wore a ribbon in the colors of the Ukrainian flag while actress Lisa Ann Walter was seen with blue and yellow flowers pinned to her black dress.
“It will conflict a bit, but it is worth it,” said Belafonte USA Today on the red carpet. “It’s important for us to show our solidarity with Ukraine and I’m happy that I have a yellow and blue ribbon.”
While some were supportive, others chose words to acknowledge and express solidarity with Ukraine.
Lady Gaga This is a beautiful night where we all come together to celebrate the arts and celebrate each other and there is so much going on in the world. My heart really goes out to Ukraine and I think we should all really sit in gratitude for this. “
