Coach Pete Carroll announced the news on Friday. He expressed confidence that Carson, Seattle’s top driver for the previous three seasons, will compete next year.

It was another blow to the 3-6 Seahawks but not a surprise. Carson’s prospects for a return this year have been in doubt for some time, and Carroll signaled earlier in the week that his season could come to an end when he fails to make the progress Seattle has been hoping for.
Alex Collins is expected to remain Seattle’s starter, a role he has taken on since Week 5.
Collins (groin) is again on injury reports this week but is “ready to go” for Sunday’s game against the NFC West-led Cardinals, according to Carroll. Strong safety Jamal Adams (groin) and diagonal DJ Reed (groin/knee) is listed as problematic and will be the game’s decision, Carroll said.
Carson, 27, hasn’t played since his neck began to bother him following Seattle’s win over San Francisco in Week 4. “He was an avid weightlifter, and he put a ton of weight on his shoulder and it was right there,” says Carroll. “Who knows, it could come from anywhere. But it’s a kind of developmental erosion. He hasn’t shown any sign of it from the past.”
Carroll said surgery would be considered this season if Carson was able to continue playing, and doing so now helps him restart his detox.
Carson has a contract through 2022 after testing the company for free last season and is returning to Seattle on a two-year, $10.425 million deal. It includes $5.5 million guaranteed and an artificial year in 2023 that will automatically void.
