See Donald Glover’s Beyoncé-Inspired Series
Hell doesn’t rage like a scorned pop stan. This could also be the tagline for the new version Donald Glover series meet again, based on the bloody trailer that dropped on Friday morning.
If you’ve been on the Internet for the past few years, you know that pop artist fans can be the funniest or scariest demographic (usually the second audience) to interact with. So it feels fitting that Glover, a proven master of horror and comedy, will take on this social media archetype in his first post.Atlanta risky.
If it’s not clear from the title, the Prime Video series — which debuted at SXSW on March 10 and debuted as a streamer on March 17 — is especially a not-so-subtle wink for the audience. with an army of stans. In the trailer, we see The Deuce star Dominique Fishback is obsessed with a black female musician named Ni’Jah, to whom fans express their love through bee emoji. In one scene, Fishback is staring at a poster for the fictional singer’s “Running Scared II” tour. On the other hand, she’s using her new credit card to buy a $1,800 concert ticket. (If you still don’t know which fan group the show is referring to, her name rhymes with fiancé.)
Fishback’s protagonist, Dre, is (hopefully!) a lot more carefree than the average person who replies to random people on Twitter. Many times, through the dub, we hear Dre ask someone, “Who’s your favorite artist?” – sounds more menacing each time. The trailer also has a lot of blood, including a scene where Dre is wiping a gallon of blood off the floor while dancing. In another moment, Dre stops a woman from opening the trunk of her car. When another jokingly asked if she had “a dead body in there”, she burst out laughing hysterically.
The show also boasts some illustrious faces, including R&B singer Chloe Bailey as Dre’s best friend, social media star Rickey Thompson and even Paris Jackson. If WILLwarm is anything like Atlanta—and it certainly resembles the FX series in terms of aesthetics—we can expect some comedic, potentially award-winning moments for each guest star as well as Fishback, who delivers a delicious degrading performance in just the intro.
In recent Vanity Fair article, Glover description Reunion as a “post-truth” combination of French porn piano teacher and by Martin Scorsese comedy king. Many hyphens presented this idea to Janinne Nabers, who worked with Glover on Atlanta And by HBO the guard; she told the magazine that she was particularly excited about telling an anti-hero story through “the lens of a modern-day black woman.”
With a dynamic host in Nabers and a stacked cast, Reunion feel destined for the critically-loved and even Emmy-nominated position. However, the response from BeyHive may be more intriguing to observe. It can be said that the stars of Reunion might want to turn off their Twitter mentions first.
