Sensex up more than 350 points, Nifty trades above 17,450; IT, auto stocks among top gainers
New Delhi: Indian stock benchmarks started the first session of 2022 on a positive note led by gains in IT and auto stocks. Asian shares edged higher on Monday as South Korea’s KOSPI gained 0.40% and the Shanghai Composite index gained 0.57%.
Back home, as of 9:22 a.m., the shared Sensex 30 pack was up 360 points or 0.62% to 58,614 and the broader NSE Nifty was up 105 points or 0.61% higher to 17,459.
Small and mid-cap stocks traded in the green as the Nifty Midcap 100 index gained 0.42% and small-cap stocks gained 0.54%.
In terms of stocks specifically, Eicher Motors was the top Nifty gainer as the shares rose 4.27% to Rs 2,702.65. Tata Motors, Coal India, SBI Life and Tech Mahindra were also among the gainers.
On the other hand, HindalCo, ONGC, Tata Consumer Products and UltraTech Cements were among the losers.
Market breadth was quite positive with 2,144 shares gaining while 518 stocks declined on BSE.
On the 30-stock BSE platform, L&T, Wipro, Tech Mahindra, HCL Tech and Asian Paints attracted the most gains with their shares up as much as 1.40% in initial trading.
Sun Pharma, Dr Reddy’s and IndusInd Bank were among those that fell.
The BSE Sensex benchmark rose 459.50 points or 0.80% to end at 58,253.82 on Friday; while the broader NSE Nifty jumped 150.10 points or 0.87% to hit 17,354.05.
