With less than two weeks to go until the first weekend of May, a bevy of contenders for the GI Kentucky Derby and GI Kentucky Oaks took to racetracks across the country to meet the stiff winds on Friday morning. Seven.

Brown's second derby hopeful, winner of the GIII Lambholm South Tampa Bay Derby Domestic products (Practical joke), went half a mile in :48.40 at Payson Park on Saturday morning and train to Kentucky on Monday, with rival Oaks usually owning and 'Rising star TDN' Ways and means (Practical joke). The latter drilled five plates in 1:00.60 at Payson Park on Saturday.

Steel only (justification) produced six eventful furlongs in 1:13.80 (:13.40, :37.20, :49.40). After starting to move on his own, he was joined inside by a stablemate and the duo faced a pair of Norm Casse workers at the half-mile pole. But when they reached the road, Wayne Lukas students separated and completed the work in parallel.
Someone trained by Lukas Lemon Muffins (Collected), who earned his way into the Oaks with a defeat in the GIII Honeybee S., went five furlongs in 1:02.20.
Gargan, McPeek One Pair in Each Lane
New York-based trainer Danny Gargan will have two runners in this year's Run for the Roses and that team looked each other through the half-mile breeze in :48.20 (16/123) Saturday in Louisville.

Mystik Dan (Goldencents), upset winner in the GIII Southwest S. and third in the GI Arkansas Derby, will carry barn hope Ken McPeek and earn the bullet for Saturday's five-day work to be counted. on: 59.40 (1/71) ) below the Twin Towers. 'Rising star TDN'Thorpedo Anna (Fast Anna) continued to thrive following her comeback win in the GIII Fantasy S. and won by five points in 1:00.60 (14/71).
“She was a super nice girl,” McPeek said. “I was impressed with how easily she could win the Fantasy so soon after the layoff and she ran so well on this surface at Churchill. They better bring a bear [in the Oaks] because I'm carrying a grizzly bear. I wouldn't mind letting her face the ponies.”

Stronghold blew a bullet at Santa Anita
Wall (Ghostzapper), the eventual winner of the GI Santa Anita Derby, ran a fast half-mile at :46:60 Saturday morning at Arcadia under the guidance of jockey Antonio Fresu and under the supervision of his trainer Phil D'Amato.
Arriving at the track just after 6:30 a.m., Stronghold pulled away at the half-mile pole a few lengths behind a stablemate, even tied by one-sixteenth of a mile at the finish and narrowly ahead. California-based sprinter Crack The Chosen Vron (Vronsky) shared a time in the half-mile.
“He makes it so easy,” Fresu said. “I actually expected the route he would take to be about :48,” he added. “The track today was a bit fast. I didn't ask him for anything.”
According to D'Amato, Stronghold will move to Kentucky next Tuesday and will have his final Derby work next weekend.
