SIU investigates after OPP officer discharges anti-riot weapon at man during Omemee break-in – Peterborough
Ontario police watchdog is investigating after an OPP officer was discharged Enfield riot weapon (ARWEN) at a man in a reported break-in at a village apartment Omeme early Tuesday.
The Special Investigation Unit invokes its mission after the incident between Kawartha Lakes City OPP 19-year-old officers and suspects.
The SIU said around 1:00 a.m. on July 5, OPP responded to a reported break-in at an apartment complex on James Street North in Omemee. The staff first located an injured man and took care of him. They also saw three men running from the mansion.
One of the men was found in the backyard of a mansion on nearby East Victoria Street. Officers engaged the man and one of the officers freed his ARWEN.
“The man has been arrested. At this point, it does not appear that he suffered any serious injuries,” SIU stated.
On Tuesday, SIU investigators were at the scene of the apartment complex – the same building where OPP responded to the July 2 triple stabbing that resulted in the arrest of a man. for trying to kill.
The SIU said its mandate came because the ARWEN is classified as a firearm – defined as a weapon with a barrel from which any shot, projectile or other projectile can be launched and capable of being fired. possibility of serious injury or death.
Two investigators and a forensic investigator have been assigned to the case.
