Stephen Colbert and Chris Hayes Roast Josh Hawley’s January 6th Escape
Stephen Colbert is the only late-night host to go live after Thursday night big hearing at prime time from the committee on January 6. And while they provided him with a lot of material to work with, it was a video by Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) humorously running away from the Capitol after sparking riots he can’t stop talking about.
In his opening monologue, Late show The presenter called Hawley “the man who famously raised his fist in solidarity with the crowd before entering Parliament that day.”
“Turns out, once the mob broke into the building, he wasn’t very enthusiastic about standing with them!” Colbert added before broadcasting the clip to any viewers who may have missed it. “Look at him!” he said with a laugh, demonstrating it again with the animation running sound effects below to add insult to injury.
But having been Colbert’s first guest of the night, MSNBC host Chris Hayes joined the show, they really got to know why the committee decided to highlight what the host described described as a “really lovely moment”.
Colbert asks the “value” of showing “Mr. Fist Up” “skedaddling” out of the crowd, Hayes smiled and replied, “The value is that the committee asked Josh Hawley to go on his own. “
While “it was important for us to see them running because they were scared, because they were being evacuated,” Hayes said it also revealed something very important about Hawley specifically.
“You were out there that day throwing your fists and playing with fire, and people would see you do it and see you fundraise later and see how you talk about how you own the libs, ‘ he said, ‘but didn’t see you with your tail between your legs when the mob was about to slam your door down. “
