Stephen Colbert opened his last monologue before The Late Show continue the hiatus for the rest of the summer by another round of victory about the FBI raid on Mar-a-Lago.
Specifically, the presenter noticed a new pattern emerging in the way the former president’s biggest defenders have changed their tune over the past few days. “It started out as ‘nothing to see here’ and quickly became ‘anything you see is included here by the FBI,'” he said. “And all of the ex-president’s henchmen gobbled up delicious food.”
After playing Trump allies spreading that conspiracy in the conservative media, Colbert said, “You know that when you accuse someone of planting evidence before they say they even found it. see anything? That’s when you know they’ll find something.”
“So how did the FBI agents supposedly bring in the 12 boxes of evidence they took out?” he asks. “Ainsley Earhardt has a very stupid theory.”
The Fox and friends The co-host pointed out this week that FBI agents came in backpacks, asking, “What’s in that backpack?”
“Good, Ainsley!” Colbert replied. “Everybody knows, you have to find the police before they search you. That’s why I always say to the TSA, “Come on, sir, first, I’ll crack your crap.”
The host then explained that “in order to conduct a search, the FBI had to present a search warrant and to take anything away, they had to provide the former manager with an itemized receipt of all whatever they took.” And while Trump may reveal those documents and “mysteries and conspiracies can be unraveled,” Colbert added, “it’s clear he doesn’t want that, because as long as we don’t know, he doesn’t want that.” whatever, he is free to say anything.”
That’s why Attorney General Merrick Garland announced on Thursday that the Justice Department has filed a request for those documents to be sealed. “The former president has until tomorrow to file an application in court to prevent that from happening,” Colbert said, “which would mark the first time he has turned down an offer of a full release.”
