Steve Bronksi, the keyboardist who founded the synth group Bronksi Beat in the 1980s, has died at the age of 61, an old friend of the band said.
Jimmy Somerville, who formed the band with Bronksi and Larry Steinbachek in 1983, shared the tribute on Twitter and said: “So sad to hear that Steve Bronski has passed away. He was such a talented and very traveling person. positive.
“Working with him on songs and a song that changed our lives and touched so many others’ lives was a fun and exciting time. Thanks for the tune Steve.”
Musical trio who have released hits including Smalltown Boy and Why? – known for campaigning on gay rights issues, with their debut album, The Age of Consent, featuring the age of consent for men in countries around the world on their sleeve inside as a protest.
Somerville eventually left to form the pop group The Communards with Pastor Richard Coles.
He was replaced by John Foster and later by Jonathan Hellyer.
Steinbachek died of cancer at the age of 56 in late 2016.
