Steve Torrence gets his first win this year at Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals
BRAINERD, Minn. – Four-time Top Fuel defending champion Steve Torrence raced to his first win of the season on Sunday, securing his event win at the Brainerd International Raceway during the 40th annual Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals .
Beating eight-time season champion Tony Schumacher in the final round, Torrence took his 52nd win – and first since November – with a run time of 3,866 seconds at 322.04 mph.
“Once you’ve got the success and dominance that we’ve had, it’s very hard not to have that. You just have to dig into it and dig into it,” Torrence said. “[But] these Capco boys, they’re ugly to the bone. We’ve shown it time and time again. We don’t forget how to win, but, I feel like a lot.
“I have all the confidence and faith of the world in this team because that car is always lousy to the bone. Maybe we are packing each other at the right time because we are charge for that [fifth title]. “
Bob Tasca III won the Funny Car for the third time in four races. He overtook six-time Brainerd winner Ron Capps with 3,942 at 329.42 in the Ford Mustang.
