Stressed infant formula-feeding parents in Saskatchewan call shortage ‘no joke’
Nakaylia Tudway-Cains of Saskatchewan first noticed empty shelves, where baby powdered milk should have happened about a month ago and now it has become a problem.
“This is no joke and I really wish there were more options for our babies and especially those who have no other choice and rely heavily on formula,” said Tudway-Cains. speak.
Tudway-Cains switched to formula when her 9-month-old son was diagnosed with a milk protein allergy.
“We tried a few different recipes and one didn’t work, then the other did,” says Nakaylia Tudway-Cains.
She turned to her pediatrician and dietitian for help and now pays $400 a month for over-the-counter formula.
She can still get some this way but the others can’t.
Lutos Villanueva said: “We are about to drink the last bottle of the day.
The recipe that Villanueva’s 9-month-old baby Greyson drank was so difficult to find that Villanueva posted a Facebook post on pages across the province asking if anyone had more drinks.
Villanueva has also ordered some from the US but it has yet to arrive and rebranding is not an option.
“As soon as he realized it was another milk, he would stop drinking so we were very stuck with Similac,” Villanueva said.
The Retail Council of Canada says formula supply has been an ongoing issue since mid-2021, which has been made worse by recalls and temporary factory closures from the manufacturer. big Abbott.
“Some of that includes global shortages for some of the raw materials that go into baby formula, particularly for those products,” said Michelle Wasylyshen, national spokeswoman for the Retail Council of Canada. formula milk has no substitute”.
Despite the challenge, the Tudway-Cain and Villanueva families say they consider themselves lucky, as their baby is not an infant completely dependent on formula.
“Hopefully he will stop drinking formula soon,” Villanueva said.
In a few months, their babies will be bigger than formula – they say they just need to hold on a little longer.
