Sunny Edwards On ‘Bam’ Rodriguez: “I’m Going To Make Him Look Silly” On December 16th On DAZN

By Charles Brun: IBF flyweight champion Sunny Edwards predicts he’s going to make WBO champ Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodiguez “look silly” when they meet in a unification fight on December 16th live on DAZN at the Desert Diamond Arena, in Glendale, Arizona.
Edwards (20-0, 4 KOs) will be on the road for this one, entering hostile territory fighting the hard-hitting phenom ‘Bam’ Rodriguez (18-0, 11 KOs) in front of what is expected to be a large pro-Rodriguez crowd.
Sunny’s lack of power will be a huge obstacle for him in this fight because ‘Bam’ can really punch, and he’s also an outstanding boxer. All the slick moves that Sunny typically uses likely won’t help him against the 23-year-old Texas native ‘Bam’ Rodriguez if he can’t stand his ground on December 16th.
Edwards’ recent performance against Andres Campos had to have given promoter Eddie Hearn second thoughts about his decision to sign him to his Maatchroom Boxing stable because he looked awful.
Before the fight, Hearn had been talking about how great Sunny is and how he would be the best fighter in the UK, but man, he looked dreadful. If Sunny loses to Bam in a one-sided blowout, Hearn could be looking to free himself of this albatross.
Bam has looked outstanding in his last five fights against these quality operators:
– Cristian Gonzalez
– Israel Gonzalez
– Srisaket Sor Rungvisai
– Carlo Cuadras
– Jose Alejandro Burgos
It’s questionable whether Sunny could beat any of those talents, but he doesn’t have the pop in his punches to get the job done.
“I’ve been waiting for this event; I think, my whole life. My whole boxing career definitely,” said Sunny Edwards to Matchroom Boxing about his December 16th unification fight against WBO flyweight champion Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez.
“I think at my weight division, I’ve always escaped those events that people really care about. I mean, look at this, everyone’s excited about the AJ fight coming on; I can’t wait for this fight.
“I want to thank the man to my right, Eddie Hearn, for making it happen. He delivered me on his promise. It took one fight longer than we both wanted, but we managed to bully ‘Bam’ and his team into a corner.
“They couldn’t run away no more, and now, 16th of December, Arizona, we’ll go to work.
“I don’t know, to be honest,” said Edwards when asked what ‘Bam’ Rodriguez brings that he’s never seen before. “I think I’ve been in some with some very good fighters.
“Bam’s definitely exciting, and he’s definitely got a lot of hype, traction behind his career, but I’m looking to put a big stop to that. I feel like he can’t come forward.
“I’m going to have him falling in all night, and I think I’m going to make him look silly in his backyard. Well, the closest thing.
“Well, it’s a, it’s a top pound-for-pound fighter. I genuinely believe me and ‘Bam’ are two of the brightest talents in World Boxing at the moment. I genuinely believe that. I think a lot of people that have seen our careers and trajectories are very similar.
“We’ve been career boxers our whole life. I think this is generally at our ages as elite as the elite can get and that it could be a special one to close out the year,” said Edwards.
